Western's Munro Institute to Host ‘The Power of Civic Engagement’ Conference April 9

Western Washington University’s Ralph Munro Institute for Civic Education will host a conference from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, in Miller Hall and Fraser Hall on campus. The conference, titled “The Power of Civic Engagement,” is free and open to the public.

Clock hours are being offered to teachers who attend. A packet for teachers is available on the Munro Institute website.

The conference seeks to advance the Munro Institute mission of “promoting civic literacy” for students and the broader community.

This year’s conference kicks off with a keynote address by Washington State Sen. Pramila Jayapal.  Her address will be at 10 a.m. The following panels follow the keynote.

  • Media: Telling the Story, or Changing the World
  • Sustainability: A Humanistic Perspective
  • The Role of Elections and Political Parties in Improving Our Nation
  • Racial Justice I: Black Lives, Brown Lives and the Criminal Justice System
  • Racial Justice II: Indigenous Peoples, Asians and the Criminal Justice System
  • Global Citizenship and Engagement in the 21st Century

The film “Children of the Civil Rights,” produced by Bellingham filmmaker Julia Clifford, will be shown at 12:30 p.m. in Miller Hall. The film depicts the little-known campaign to desegregate public accommodations in her hometown of Oklahoma City in the 1950s.

Details of the sessions are available online.
