Western’s Institute for Global Engagement to Host Free, Public Fall Film Series

Western Washington University’s Institute for Global Engagement will host a free, public film series on campus this fall.

The film series schedule is as follows:

Still Life

6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5 in Miller Hall 138

A town in Fengjie county is gradually being demolished and flooded to make way for the Three Gorges Dam. A man and woman visit the town to locate their estranged spouses, and become witness to the societal changes in contemporary China.

Drama, 2006, 111 min.  In Mandarin with English subtitles.

Quilombo

6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 2 in Miller Hall 138

During the Portuguese-Dutch War in 17th century colonial Brazil, a group of plantation slaves revolt and escape to the mountains where they join other former slaves in the independent, self-governing community of Palmares. 

Historical drama, 1984, 119 min. 

In Portuguese with English subtitles.

Solar Mamas

6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30 in Miller Hall 138

Jordanian wife and mother Rafea is leaving home for the first time to attend a college in India that is training rural women to become solar energy engineers. Once there, she will join women like her from the developing world to learn concrete skills to change their communities. Documentary, 2012, 52 min.
