Western Reads and the World Issues Forum to Host October Events by Author Courtney Martin and Guests

On Wednesday, Oct. 21 and Thursday, Oct. 22 Western Reads and the Western Washington University’s Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies World Issues Forum will present a series of events by guest speakers Courtney Martin and Raul Diaz with a film showing of Emily Abt’s film, “Daddy, Don’t Go.”

The presentations are free and open to the public.

At noon on Wednesday, Oct. 21 in the Fairhaven auditorium, Diaz will present “An Altar Boy with a Gun.” Diaz’s presentation will discuss his work with Homeboy Industries, an organization that helps former gang involved and previously incarcerated men and women redirect their lives.

At 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at the Limelight Theater at 1416 Cornwall Ave, the film, “Daddy, Don’t Go” will be shown. The movie explores the topic of urban fathers who raise their children alone. The film’s director, Emily Abt, will lead a Q&A period after the 6:30 p.m. viewing.

At 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22 at the PAC Concert Hall on the Western campus, author Courtney Martin will present a talk entitled “Do it Anyway: The New Generation of Activists.”
