U.S. News Rankings Show WWU as Top Public Master’s-Granting School in Pacific Northwest
BELLINGHAM – Western Washington University is the highest-ranking public, master’s-granting university in the Pacific Northwest for the 20th year in a row, according to the 2020 U.S. News & World Report college rankings.
Western also ranked tied for third among top public master’s-granting universities in the West, a region stretching from Texas to the Pacific.
“Western is proud to again be recognized among the best universities in the region, and to receive high marks for value as well as academic excellence. Our commitment to increasing inclusive student success depends on making high quality, transformative education attainable for students and families. Achieving high marks in academic quality and affordability is a testament to the dedication of Western’s outstanding faculty and staff, and I congratulate them on this well-deserve recognition,” said Western President Sabah Randhawa.
Western ranked tied for 17th among the top schools in the West, which includes both public and private schools. The region is comprised of 13 states with a population of 75 million people and over 120 colleges and universities. The previous year Western ranked 19th in that category as well.
Western also was ranked as 10th in best in Best Colleges for Veterans, among public, master’s granting colleges and universities in the West, as well as one of the Best Value Schools; and one of the Top Performers on Social Mobility.
U.S. News has separate categories for “national” (doctoral-granting or research) universities and liberal arts colleges and for specialties such as business and engineering.

Rankings are based on a variety of criteria including academic reputation, student selectivity and retention, faculty resources, peer assessment and financial resources.
