Rehabilitation Counseling Program awarded new $1 million grant from the U.S. Dept. of Education

The Master of Arts (MA) in Rehabilitation Counseling (RC) Program at Western Washington University has been awarded a 5-year, $1 million Long-Term Training Grant by the U.S. Department of Education’s Rehabilitation Services Administration. A minimum of 65 percent of the funding is allocated to provide financial support to 30 students with tuition and stipends.

Elizabeth Boland, the RC Academic Program director, will be the Project Director and will oversee the grant project including awarding student scholarships.

The mission of Western's master's-degree program in Rehabilitation Counseling is to prepare dedicated and qualified rehabilitation counselors who will partner with individuals with disabilities to enhance their lives, including self-determination, independence, meaningful employment, and full community participation. In order to fulfill this mission, the program integrates academic preparation with experiential and clinical components to enhance the readiness of graduates to offer quality client-centered services.

The 90 quarter-hour curriculum provides sequential developmental learning experiences with an emphasis on developing competencies and outcomes. Courses are offered at the Everett University Center using a hybrid model of delivery where students take a combination of face-to-face, hybrid, and distance learning courses, which allows the program to flexibly meet student needs as well as recruit students from a larger and more diverse geographic area. Students receive field placement and career advising, completing 50 hours of pre-practicum, 100 hours of practicum, and 600 hours of internship.
