Professional staff community service leave day to be available

Effective Feb. 5, 2014, professional staff will be able to use a leave day for community service as part of a university pilot program.

Western President Bruce Shepard has provided support for the pilot program, which is scheduled to end on June 30, 2015.

Creation of the program is in response to a survey of the Professional Staff Organization membership, coordinated with the Professional Staff Executive Committee, in which 83 percent of the 129 respondents indicated their support for a Community Service Leave Day. The PSO Salary and Benefits Committee will be responsible for evaluating this pilot program in collaboration with Human Resources.

Utilizing the Department Leave Request Form, professional staff will be able to identify where they are volunteering, enabling Human Resources and PSO to evaluate this pilot program. The leave day will need to be in full-day increments based on appointment percent.
