Police enforcing campus dismount zones

With paths in the campus core being constricted by the construction at the Carver Academic Facility, University Police are paying close attention to dismount zones on campus.

The rules, which have been in place for several years, state that bicycles, skateboards and other wheeled transportation devices be walked in designated areas of campus between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on regular class days, including finals week, said University Police Chief Darin Rasmussen. A grace period has been in effect this quarter while officers hand out fliers and talk with bicyclists and skateboarders about the rules, but they soon will begin to write tickets, he said. Police conduct the emphasis every quarter to raise awareness among commuters of the need to dismount on campus.

Dismount zones (click here for a detailed map) are enforced in all of Red Square, the bricked corridor from Red Square to the Engineering Technology Building, the PAC Plaza and Vendor's Row near the Viking Union.

A bicyclist will be fined $15 for the first offense, $30 for the second and $60 for every violation thereafter. Skateboarders, longboarders and inline skaters will see $15 fines for the first violation and $60 each for subsequent transgressions. Penalties are double if the rider is involved in a collision with a pedetrian or object or if the rider attempts to elude a uniformed police officer.

The code also states that bicyclists and skateboarders must observe a maximum speed limit of 3 miles per hour when sharing a path with pedestrians and 7 mph at all other times on campus.
