Plan for delays through Burlington, Mount Vernon due to I-5 Skagit River Bridge collapse
As family members travel to Western Washington University’s spring commencement on Saturday, June 15, and as WWU students depart for the summer, drivers can expect delays of 30 to 45 minutes along detours through Burlington and Mount Vernon around the Interstate 5 Skagit River Bridge collapse.
State transportation officials say the I-5 bridge over the Skagit River is expected to reopen sometime next week, after workers finish installing a temporary span to replace the portion of the bridge that collapsed May 23.
Several signed detours are in place routing drivers around the closed section of I-5. WSDOT engineers continue to monitor traffic and are working to improve traffic flow through the detour areas.
Detour info:
- Large maps of the detour routes
- Travel times and traffic cameras through the detours
- Don't forget that Amtrak Cascades makes multiple trips each day through this area
- And the Whatcom Transportation Authority offers bus service between Fairhaven Station and Western’s campus
