Paul Merriman to discuss investing for young professionals May 20

Retired Investment Banker Paul Merriman, a Western Washington University alumnus, will present “Investing for Young Professionals” at 6 p.m. Monday, May 20, in Academic Instructional Center Room 210 on Western’s campus.

The presentation is open to all Western students and is part of Western’s College of Business and Economics Professional Readiness series and CBE Week. There will be a question-and-answer session after the presentation.

The purpose of the session is to help Western graduates make good financial decisions as they leave college and pursue their professional careers. Often the first thing a new professional faces are decisions about their new 401(k) and other investments at a new job. Merriman will give advice on those decisions as well as many others.

Merriman founded the investment firm Merriman, LLC in Seattle, and retired in 2011. He now devotes much of his time to educational projects. One of those projects is support for teaching a new Personal Investing course (FIN 216) at Western which will be offered beginning this fall.

Merriman is the author of numerous books on investing including, “Financial Fitness Forever: 5 Steps to More Money, Less Risk and More Peace of Mind,” “Live It Up Without Outliving Your Money,” “First Time Investor: Grow and Protect Your Money,” and “101 Investment Decisions Guaranteed to Change Your Financial Future.”

His weekly podcast, Sound Investing, was recognized by Money magazine as the best Money Podcast in 2008. Paul has been on national TV many times and in 2011 and 2012 he hosted a national PBS special entitled “Financial Fitness After 50.” He also writes a weekly column on Marketwatch.com, a Wall Street Journal website.

Merriman will be offering free access to his e-books and biweekly newsletter to attendees. Students can register for the limited-space event online.
