Panel discussion Oct. 19 to share info about AmeriCorps

Western Washington University’s Career Services Center and the Center for Service-Learning are holding a panel discussion Oct. 19 for students and alumni interested in exploring opportunities with AmeriCorps.

The panel, "AmeriCorps: the insiders guide to everything you need to know," will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, in Viking Union Room 552. The panelists include Beth Parker, WWU Center for Service Learning; Kelly Skillingstead, Compass to Campus; Samantha Dyess, City Year; and Quinn Slayton, Serve Northwest Washington.

AmeriCorps offers thousands of opportunities in nonprofit organizations nationwide in community development, environment, public safety, housing, youth development and more. At Wednesday's event, AmeriCorps program coordinators and a current member will share insights and expert advice to help students:

  • Learn more about the experience and benefits
  • Find out if AmeriCorps is the right fit
  • Get the inside scoop on the application process

In a tight job market, AmeriCorps offers an option for students who would like to gain meaningful, professional experience in unique and challenging environments. Western graduates have served in AmeriCorps positions building homes in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, teaching reading to students in low-income communities, and assisting nonprofit agencies who make a difference in our communities.
