One-day blood drive sees 33 donors

Despite that it was on the first day of finals week, the one-day blood drive Monday, Dec. 7, saw a total of 33 donors, five of whom were first-timers.

Bloodworks Northwest collected 29 units of blood at the drive. Blood donations are critical to maintain a stable blood supply for surgeries and medical emergencies, and for supporting patients battling life-threatening illnesses like leukemia and other cancers.

Below are just a few of many patients in our community who recently received blood products:

  • 30-year-old patient: Open-heart surgery. Patient used 12 units Red Blood Cells, 10 units Plasma, 6 units Platelets, and 2 Cryoprecipitate Pools.
  • 63-year-old patient: Cardiac surgery. Patient used 49 units Red Blood Cells, 48 units Plasma, 12 units Platelets, 13 Cryoprecipitate Pools.
  • 59-year-old patient: Organ transplant. Patient used 44 units Red Blood Cells, 21 units Plasma, 12 units Platelets
  • 32-year-old patient: Obstetric bleeding. Patient used 10 units Red Blood Cells, 10 units Plasma, 2 units Platelets, 2 Cryoprecipitate Pools.

Each day, 800 people must donate blood to meet the needs of patients in hospitals. Your blood drive played an important role in helping meet that goal.

The next WWU blood drive is Jan. 12 to 14.
