Notice regarding computer Java updates

Computer users are Western Washington University should allow updates to the installed Java software to run when they are notified of the update.

The university is still running Java 6.xx, and any automatic updates will be for that version. Users should not, however, manually try to update Java, as they will end-up with Java 7.xx, which may cripple some WWU functions.

Additionally, when installing the updates, users should watch for and uncheck the box during the install process where additional software is being pushed by the Java update. Usually it will be the "Ask Toolbar" or the "Macaffee Antivirus installer." Neither of these should be installed. If users want to check to see if these products have been installed, they should go to the Control Panel, Programs and Features (Windows 7) or ‘Add or Remove Programs (Windows XP). Uninstall either of those two products if they are present.

The Macaffee Antivirus program is just a download of the installer and will not have any effect on your computer unless you run it. The "Ask Toolbar," on the other hand, can seriously degrade the performance of Web browsers, causing slow website response and browser lockups.
