Nominations needed for faculty citizenship award

The Faculty Senate Executive Council seeks nominations for the 2016 Representative Timm Ormsby Award for Faculty Citizenship. The award recognizes exemplary civic engagement by members of the Western faculty.

The Ormsby Award for Faculty Citizenship is presented by the Washington Council of Faculty Representatives and was created in 2013 to encourage, recognize, and honor exemplary civic engagement by faculty from each of the six public baccalaureates in Washington state.  The award was inspired by the many achievements of Representative Timm Ormsby, including his steadfast support of higher education in the state.  Award winners embody service in the public interest, including the development of programs of civic engagement, enhanced community participation in state government, legislative and local partnerships that strengthen the civic education of Washington residents, research that addresses critical needs and issues affecting the residents of Washington, and community-based programs that facilitate the democratic or electoral process.

To nominate a colleague for consideration, please email Faculty.Senate@wwu.edu by 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1. Nominations should include a brief summary of the individual’s public service activities, years of service, impact of service, etc.

For purposes of award selection, service is to be regarded as distinct from service required of all faculty members, i.e., serving on committees, undertaking departmental projects, and service for professional organizations.

Past Ormsby Award recipients:

  • 2015 - Todd Donovan, Political Science
  • 2014 - Bill Lyne, English
