Next concert in Firehouse Piano Series slated for March 2

Western Washington University’s Department of Music continues the Firehouse Piano Series with a concert showcasing Rachel Dailey and Madeline Slettedahl at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 2, at the Firehouse Performing Arts Center at 1314 Harris Ave. in Fairhaven. The evening program will feature works by Szymanowski, Stravinsky, Debussy, Beethoven, Brahms, Rachmaninoff and Ravel. “Although Madeline Slettedahl is a sophomore and Rachel Dailey is a freshman, both of them are recent competition winners and have taken the Music Department by storm, despite their youth,” said Jeffrey Gilliam, Western professor of Music. Dailey will perform works of Karol Szymanowski (a Mazurka), two etudes by Claude Debussy, and an etude of Chopin, in addition to the finale from Chopin's B minor Sonata. Dailey has excelled in several competitions such as the 2011 Simon-Fiset Competition in which she received first place. Slettedahl will play the entire "Tempest" sonata by Beethoven, Ravel's "Une Barque Sur L'ocean" from Miroirs, “Etude-tableau” by Rachmaninoff and “Rhapsody” by Brahms. Slettedahl was awarded first place at the WWU Concerto Competition as a freshman in 2011. Together Dailey and Slettedahl will perform a piano-duet at the end of the performance. Tickets are available through the Western Box Office and cost $10 for general admission, $5 for students. Western’s Box Office hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
