Multicultural Center Construction Update: May 2

Multicultural Center construction activities for the next several weeks:

Exterior

  • Demolition of the old bookstore roof continues; begin removal of old structural supports.
  • Begin demolition of pavers and walkway at former vendor’s row/entrance to the Multi-Purpose Room.  Expect noise during removal of concrete and debris, and transfer of steel panels.  Contractors will continue to monitor and be mindful of the use of diesel-powered machinery around the building air intake on the seventh floor.
  • Relocate a natural gas meter on the south side of the bookstore. Requires shutdown of natural gas to the Viking Union. The shutdown is scheduled for 5/26 over Memorial Day weekend when the VU and Bookstore are closed.

Interior

  • Prepare footings and add rebar for structural elements to support the new 7th floor; first concrete pour next month.

Refurbish Viking Union Addition West Exterior (not part of the MCC Project)

The west face of the Viking Union Addition will be restored and sealed by Facilities Management Painters. The painters will use a high lift to pressure wash, repair, and re-stain the exterior wood windows and brick that are in the 6th floor seating area down to the Underground Coffeehouse. They will also apply a sealant to the surface of the brick work on that face of the building. Work will begin in May and will produce some noise, dust, and odors.  Most of these impacts can be contained outside if windows are kept closed. There will also be a lift on the first floor of the VU, which will create some congestion for pedestrians, and the Outdoor Center. The project could take a couple of months depending on the condition of the existing wood window system and weather. If you have questions about this project, please contact the Facilities Management Customer Service Center at 650-3420.
