Multicultural Center Construction Update: May 11

The demolition phase of the Multicultural Center is nearing completion. Most of the bookstore mezzanine has been removed as well as several of the 6th-floor level exterior walls. Many of the old bricks will be salvaged and reused in other parts of the project. New construction begins soon.

Construction activities for the next several weeks include:

Demolition

  • Contractors will remove a small section of roof on the 7th floor level of the VU (above KUGS, and room #714).  Expect intermittent noise especially as the contractors cut steel and metal components.  Wood and plastic cover room #714 windows to protect existing sections of the building and the air intake.  The wood protection will remain for the rest of the project.
  • Relocate a natural gas meter on the south side of the bookstore. Requires shutdown of natural gas to the Viking Union. The shutdown is scheduled for 5/26 over Memorial Day weekend when the VU and Bookstore are closed.

New Construction

  • On Friday, May 11contractors will pour the first of the concrete footings and pilasters.  One of the pilasters being poured is adjacent to the service elevator on the 5th floor of the VU.  Access to the 5th floor will not be available from the service elevator for approximately 2-3 weeks starting the week of May 21.  It will, however, operate at all the regular stops on the 6th and 4th floors. The public passenger elevators and the established accessible routes to the 5th floor of the VU will NOT be impacted.  Concrete pump and delivery trucks will be located to the east of the old Bookstore, as far from air intakes as feasible.

Revised Work Schedule May 14 -18

  • To avoid potential impacts/conflicts with Western’s Alumni Weekend, the contractors will not be on site Friday May 18th.  From Monday, May 14th to Thursday, May 17th contractors will switch to a 4 day/10 hour work schedule (7 am to 5:30 pm).  The following week they will return to a 5 day per week schedule.
