Multicultural Center Construction Update

Since the last construction update, concrete was poured at the site to create columns, walkways, and fill.  The critical path for construction continues to be getting a roof on the entire structure prior to the wet season this fall.

Structural Steel

The basic skeleton and form of the new addition is becoming visible as contractors continue to install and connect structural steel beams and columns. Although it can be captivating to watch the crane lift beams in place and workers attach them, please be aware that workers are welding on site and up in the steel framework. For your own safety do not look directly at the bright light and sparks created in the welding process. Even at a distance this light is so intense it can damage your eyesight like a laser.

7th Floor

Last week contractors built temporary constructions walls outside VU 714 so they can begin the demolition of that space. Work adjacent to KUGS has been carefully scheduled and coordinated between WWU, engineers and construction contractors so that KUGS can continue to operate. Much of the complexity comes from determining how new and old systems (like fire, electrical and plumbing) will interface during construction and then at the end of the project.  Contractors plan to complete some demolition, framing and rough in work at that location over the next few weeks as a coordinated plan continues to be developed.
