Mock "accident" in Red Square highlights the importance of pedestrian safety

Western’s Central Health and Safety Committee alongside the Theatre Department staged two transportation accidents near Bond Hall the Haggard Hall Skybridge Wednesday, May 23. The dramatizations were meant to educate pedestrians on Western’s campus about the importance of transportation safey.

Junior Zachary Simms, a theater major, portrayed a student who had been riding his skateboard toward Haggard Hall and had attempted to do a series of flips off the steps, when he crashed into a student played by Naomi Williams, a senior theater education major. Simms and Williams wore stage makeup for scraped knees and elbows.

This staged incident didn’t result in two people becoming badly injured, but a real accident could have been much worse. On a busy and congested campus it is important for commuters of all kinds to remain aware of their surroundings and the safety of others.
