Man dies at WWU Wade King Student Recreation Center

At about 3:40 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, a 23-year-old man was found non-responsive in the hot tub, which is next to the pool at Western’s Wade King Student Recreation Center. WWU lifeguards attempted to revive him using CPR, as did first responders, which included the Bellingham Fire Department and University Police. The man died on the scene. He was a community member allowed to use the rec center, and not a Western student or employee. The cause of death has not yet been determined.

His name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Because of the death, the Wade King Student Recreation Center closed for the night and reopened Saturday morning at the usual time.

More information will be released as it becomes available.
