Legacy Review Task Force seeking campus input through May 15

At the beginning of Winter Quarter, a Legacy Review Task Force was charged with reviewing the names associated with Western’s buildings and colleges, including Huxley College, and with making recommendations as to whether any of these names warrant consideration for removal.  In the course of its work the Task Force has been assisted by reports about the historic naming of buildings and colleges prepared by Western Libraries Heritage Resources, the invited opinion of scholars with expertise regarding particular namesakes (specifically, T.H. Huxley), and additional research and resources, available on the Legacy Review Task Force website

The Task Force is expected to submit a report to the President by the end of Spring Quarter and is not charged with considering or recommending new names for colleges or buildings, only with providing recommendations on existing names. The final decision regarding building names rests with the WWU Board of Trustees.

The Task Force welcomes input from the community through an online feedback form, which will be open until May 15, 2021.

Members of the Task Force will also be attending the Huxley Speaker Series on April 29 to provide an overview of the Legacy Review process and the Task Force charge, as well as the materials being taken into consideration.  Community members will also be invited to submit questions about the process via chat.
