Korsmo to share study on successes, failures of first-gen college students May 24

John Korsmo, an associate professor in the human services and rehabilitation department at Western Washington University, will present “Pathway to Success: Obstacles and Supports for First-Generation College Goers” from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, May 24, in Communications Facility Room 105.

The presentation is part of a faculty research series from the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.

Korsmo's study considers the experiences of first generation college goers, from those who've graduated to those who still aspire to attend. With a specific consideration of factors such as socio-economic-status and class, the study points to stark differences in the experiences of low-income students, as opposed to those who did not come from a status of poverty. Analysis of survey results and statistical information from more than a thousand past college students points to some of the common trends and markers for success and challenges. Findings may help the world better tend to the multiple barriers that exist for first-generation students.

All faculty, staff, students and off-campus community members are invited to attend, and faculty are encouraged to invite their students. The purpose of the series is to provide opportunities to learn about research, publication of research and the direction research is taking in various disciplines and cross disciplinary areas of the university. The presentations underscore the importance of research development and creative efforts by members of the university community.
