Journalism’s Sheila Webb Receives Covert Award from the AEJMC for the Second Time

Western Washington University’s Professor of Journalism Sheila Webb has received the Covert Award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) for the second time.

The Covert Award, endowed by Catherin L.Covert, is presented by the History Division of the AEJMC to the author of the best mass communication history article or chapter in an edited collection published the previous year, nationwide.

“I am so honored to receive this award, both due to the respected colleagues who make the decision and because it is awarded in the name of Catherine L. Covert,” Webb said. “It is especially gratifying to receive it a second time.”

Webb won for her article in Journalism and Communication Monographs, “Creating Life: ‘America’s Most Potential Editorial Force.’”

"My monograph on the early years of Life magazine was written during my sabbatical, and I am grateful to Western, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs for supporting this research,” Webb said.

Webb joins just two other peers, Kathy Roberts Forde of University of Massachusetts Amherst and Richard Kielbowicz of University of Washington, in earning the honor twice. She will receive her award at the AEJMC convention on Aug. 9-12, at the Chicago History Division business meeting.
