Mark Reis to talk sustainability at Sea-Tac Airport

Mark Reis will present “Hiding in Plain Sight: Mining Sustainability at Sea-Tac Airport” as part of Western Washington University’s Huxley College of the Environment Speaker Series at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24 in AW 204.

The winter quarter Huxley College of the Environment Speaker Series will feature distinguished alumni of Huxley College. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Reis is the managing director of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, the 16th busiest passenger airport in the United States, providing service to over 33 million passengers in 2012. He currently serves on the executive committee of Airports Council International – North America and as chair of its Government Affairs Steering Committee. Reis earned a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies from Western Washington University and a master’s degree in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Reis will present a brief behind-the-scenes look at the operations of a major international airport, and will discuss how Sea-Tac has identified and exploited opportunities for sustainability improvements. The presentation will touch on the operational, political, financial and customer elements of Sea-Tac’s award-winning strategy.

Anyone interested in these topics is encouraged to come and participate; the presentation will include a question-and-answer period. The speaker series is held by Western's Huxley College of the Environment to bring together the environmentally minded community and other interested members of the Western and Bellingham communities. Speakers address topics of contemporary environmental concern in the region and the world.
