Jan. 24 to 28 is HIV/AIDS Awareness Week at Western
The Associated Students Resource and Outreach Programs offices will host a series of events during HIV/AIDS Awareness Week, Jan. 24 through Jan. 28. All events are free and open to the public.
The Social Issues Resource Center will host “The AIDS Memorial Quilt,” a quilted representation of individuals who have died due to AIDS-related complications. Each individual’s square is created by his or her friends and family. The AIDS Memorial Quilt is a poignant memorial, a powerful tool for use in preventing new HIV infections, and the largest ongoing community arts project in the world. The quilt will be on display in the Viking Union Multipurpose Room on Monday, Jan. 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and in the Fairhaven Auditorium Jan. 25 from 6 to 9 p.m. and Jan. 26 and 27 from 4 to 8 p.m.
The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Alliance and the Evergreen AIDS Foundation will present “Living with AIDS” at 7 p.m. on Jan. 25 in Viking Union Room 462B. A representative from the Evergreen AIDS Foundation will give a presentation on what it is like to live with HIV/AIDS, the difference between HIV and AIDS, awareness, prevention, quality of life, treatments and costs, stigmas and stereotypes. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.
The Sexual Awareness Center will host “Mythbusters: HIV/AIDS Myths and Facts” at 7 p.m. on Jan. 26 in Academic Instructional Center Room 303. The discussion will cover myths and stereotypes related to HIV/AIDS. Some topics will include birth control, transmission, people living with AIDS, detection, testing, symptoms, treatment and prevention techniques such as condoms.
