Inquiry-based learning showcase set for June 1

Under the theme “Inquiry-based Learning,” this year's Innovative Teaching Showcase features instructors who guide and mentor students via well-crafted learning experiences where students work actively to make meaning of course content. The new showcase publication includes written instructor portfolios, video interviews, sample course materials and lots of ideas and inspiration.

The Showcase Learning Event is set for 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, in Wilson Library Room 270.

Featured instructors:

  • Andrew Boudreaux and the Physics Team (Physics and Astronomy) designed learning experiences to bring opportunities for discovery, intellectual growth and making sense of the world to students in the Introductory Physics Lab.
  • Stephanie Treneer (Mathematics) considers math theory a playground that students are capable of exploring. She gives them the framework and freedom to collaborate and develop their logical arguments.
  • Emily Borda (Chemistry), Deb Donovan (Biology), Sue DeBari (Geology), Scott Linneman (Geology) and Alejandro Acevedo-Gutierrez (Biology), all from the SMATE team in Science, Math, and Technology Education, developed a learning cycle approach to guided inquiry in a four-course interdisciplinary science series that helps students develop conceptual understanding of certain “big ideas” in science, providing a model for how to transfer that understanding to their students once they become teachers.

The showcase also includes a profiles page where more ideas can be shared.

The new issue of the Innovative Teaching Showcase will be published prior to the learning event. For more information, visit the website or contact Justina Brown at 360-650-7210 or via e-mail at Justina.Brown@wwu.edu.
