In memoriam: Meredith Cary, 1932 - 2012

Meredith Cary, 79, entered into rest on Feb. 4, 2012, in Bellingham. She was born on June 30, 1932, in St. Joseph, Mo., to Ernest L and Helen (Tilbury) Ray.

After graduating from high school, Cary continued her education, receiving her doctorate at the University of Washington. She worked at Western Washington University as a professor of English Literature for 42 years, retiring as professor emeritus in 2006.

Although she retired from the classroom in 2006, Cary continued teaching online until the day she passed. Irish studies was her passion. During this time, she published both non-fiction and fiction literature.

For Meredith, family was very important. She and her Irish Terrier traveled to New Mexico by RV every year to watch her grandson play baseball. She spent several months each year in New Mexico with her daughter, son-in-law and grandson, whom she loved dearly.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Cary, and her son-in-law, Chauncey Eaves, both of whom moved to Bellingham in the spring of 2011 to live in the forest with Meredith; beloved sister and brother-in-law Lynne and Ben Hall, who corresponded daily through email for more than 20 years; and one grandson, Liam Cary-Eaves, who shares his M's love of writing.

Cary is preceded in death by her companion, R.D. Brown, the love of her life, and her beloved brother, Ernest Ray.
