How Can I Help? Disaster Relief for Victims of Hurricane Maria, Mexico Earthquakes, & Other Natural Disasters

Over the past five weeks, a series of devastating natural disasters have affected millions of lives around the world, from Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, to extreme flooding in Bangladesh, and landslides in Sierra Leone.  Most recently, Hurricane Maria cut a path of destruction through Puerto Rico and other parts of the Caribbean, causing catastrophic damage to housing and infrastructure in a region already reeling from previous hurricanes.  In Mexico, 8.1 and 7.1 magnitude earthquakes less than two weeks apart have killed over 300 people and severely damaged infrastructure.

“In any one of these natural disasters, the loss of life and injury, the damage to homes and infrastructure, is beyond imagining,” said President Sabah Randhawa last week.  “But to see these disasters repeatedly affecting the same regions, especially when they are already facing economic challenges, is just heartbreaking.  I know there are many members of our Western community who have family and other loved ones affected by these disasters, and I have heard from many people on campus who simply want to know how they can help.”

The Washington State Combined Fund Drive has created a Disaster Relief Center for those who wish to contribute to relief and rebuilding efforts being staged in response to these natural disasters around the world.  The Disaster Relief Center is continually updated to help donors direct their gifts to specific emerging needs and reputable charities, with options for giving via payroll deduction or credit card.
