House Capital Budget Proposed

Yesterday House Capital Budget leaders released their proposal for the state’s 2019-21 Capital Budget plan.

The House Capital Budget proposal would fund the following capital budget projects at Western:

  • $60 million in construction funding for an interdisciplinary science building which will provide greatly-needed lab and classroom space for a variety of STEM degree programs on campus;
  • $500,000 in pre-design funding for a new electrical engineering and computer science building to address capacity constraints in these degree programs. Unfortunately, the House proposal did not include funding for the design phase of this project;
  • $3 million in funding to upgrade some of the most outdated classroom and labs on campus; and
  • Funding for WWU’s minor works perseveration and programmatic projects.

The House budget would authorize WWU to self-finance a Consolidated Academic Support Services Facility, which would relocate administrative services in order to free-up existing space in the academic core of campus.

The Senate Capital Budget proposal is expected to be released later in the week. You can find President Randhawa’s statement on the governor’s budget proposals here.
