German consul, radio host to visit Western Feb. 28

Consul Michael Ahrens, from the German Consulate in San Francisco, will visit the Western Washington University campus Feb. 28. Ahrens will be accompanied by Leslie Harlson, from the German Academic Exchange Service in San Francisco, and Arndt Peltner, from Radio Goethe (KUSF) in San Francisco.

Ahrens will give a presentation at 10 a.m. Feb. 28 in Old Main Room 482 titled "Soccer & More: Win with German." This event is open to all interested in the intersections of culture, politics and sports.

In the afternoon, Ahrens will visit Bellingham High School, where he will meet with German teachers Kara Benzanson and Diane Cooper-Schick. Peltner also will talk to Bellingham High School students, about Berlin's contemporary music scene.

Leslie Harlson will stay on campus to give a presentation at 2 p.m. in College Hall Room 131 about scholarship opportunities in Germany. This event is open to all students interested in internationalizing their educational experiences. Leslie Harlson works for the DAAD, the German Academic Exchange Service, an organization that awards competitive national scholarships for qualified students. In the past year, one such prestigious scholarship was awarded to a current Western student!

In the evening, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Peltner will host a German Rocks II dance party (exclusively with German music) in the Underground Coffeehouse in the Viking Union.

All activities are sponsored by the German government via the German Consulate in San Francisco. The Department of Modern & Classical Languages is also sponsoring the event, which has been organized by the German section.
