Funding almost complete for new scholarship for WWU's veterans

Western Washington University has secured $20,000 towards a scholarship for veteran students, and is actively working to raise the remaining $5,000 needed to make it an official endowment.

According to Ann Beck, assistant director of Veteran Services at Western, the $20,000 comes from two separate donations of $10,000 from Seattle law firm Fox Rothschild and Ellen Posel and Stephan Gockley.

The scholarship will be open to student veterans at Western, but official eligibility criteria has not yet been decided.

Beck said that this scholarship will show that Western is even more committed to its veteran students.

“I want our veterans to feel like they are very much a part of the community here and that there are resources available for them,” Beck said.  “The Western community honors the service they have put into the country and also into Western itself for pursuing their educational goals. We want to make sure we are setting them up with the necessary tools for success.”

Beck said she is continuing outreach into the community in hopes of fulfilling the last funding needed for the endowment to be able to disperse a scholarship each year.
