Former Peace Corps volunteers to speak April 19

To recognize Earth Day and sustainable work around the world, the Peace Corps will hold a “Service That Helps the Earth” event at 4 p.m. April 19 in Environmental Studies Room 313 on the Western Washington University campus.

The event will feature a number of returned Peace Corps volunteers who worked on environmental projects overseas:

• Brooke Love, who worked as a natural resources management volunteer in Mali, is an assistant professor in Western's Department of Environmental Sciences.
• Sylvia Graham, who was an agro-forestry volunteer in Madagascar, is a masters graduate from Huxley College of the Environment.
• Jeremy Anhalt, who volunteered in protected areas management in Honduras, is currently a graduate student in education at WWU.
• Jeremy Friemund, who was a community development volunteer in Senegal, is now the water resource manager in the Lummi Natural Resources Department.

Western ranks second among medium-sized colleges and universities with alumni serving as Peace Corps volunteers in the 2012 rankings. This is the highest ever ranking for Western. Last year, the university was ranked third among medium-sized colleges and universities.

Since the inception of the Peace Corps, 847 Western alumni have served as volunteers; 73 Western alumni currently are serving.
