2017 Summer Research Grant

http://www.wwu.edu/rsp/documents/srg.shtml

Proposals are now being solicited for Summer Research Grants. Successful applicants receive $6,000 paid as summer salary.  The Research Advisory Committee makes funding recommendations to the Vice Provost for Research, and periodically reviews policies for awarding grants. Fifteen awards are available this academic year.

The purpose of this program is to provide faculty with time to engage in projects that will result in significant advancement of their professional development and field of research, scholarly or creative work.

Eligibility

  • Faculty applicants must be employed by WWU for the current academic year and have a contract (or formal agreement of employment with the university) for the academic year following the grant period.
  • Priority will be given to tenured and tenure-track faculty members.
  • Priority will be given to quality applications of faculty who have not received the award in the previous two-year period.
  • If the award would immediately follow or precede professional leave, it should be clarified in the proposal what will be accomplished during the summer, as distinct from the project undertaken or to be undertaken during the professional leave.
  • Faculty may not receive this award in consecutive years.
  • Faculty members in their first year are not eligible as the university offers identical summer support to first year faculty.
  • Faculty members may not receive a Summer Teaching Grant and a Summer Research Grant concurrently.
  • All summer appointments combined may not exceed 100% effort.

Evaluation of Proposals

Research Grants are awarded for research, scholarly or artistic/creative endeavors, but not for the development of curricular materials. Based upon campus feedback the faculty on the Research Advisory Committee created a rubric to evaluate proposals (see http://www.wwu.edu/rsp/documents/srg.shtml).  The committee also considers the recommendations of the Chair and the Dean in its evaluation.

Timeline

Complete proposals must be received by the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs by the deadline announced in Western Today and Calendar of Internal Deadlines located under Quick Links at http://www.wwu.edu/rsp/ . Proposals received after the deadline will not be considered.

Application Instructions

Application instructions may be found on the RSP website at http://www.wwu.edu/rsp/documents/srg.shtml.
