Faculty Senate offering an equity training on "Skills for Facilitating Social Justice Dialogues"

Western Washington University's Faculty Senate Social Justice and Equity Committee: Campus Wide Dialogue Series is offering an equity training on "Skills for Facilitating Social Justice Dialogues" The trainings will be held on Western’s campus and are to be led by Masa DeLara and Heather Jefferson.

Heather Jefferson is an educator and invested community member of the Lummi Nation who is committed to providing high quality education with humility and grace. She believes that we all benefit from a deeper understanding of how our past affects our present. Heather obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from Washington State University and has taught in the Lummi Nation and Ferndale schools.

Masa DeLara is a facilitator, trainer, and educator in the areas of early childhood education, culture and diversity awareness, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), resilience, and trauma informed environments. She is a senior trainer for the REACH (Respecting Ethnic and Cultural Heritage) Center in partnership with Western Washington University, and is a certified NEAR (Neurobiology, Epigenetics, ACEs, Resilience) trainer in Washington State. Masa has a deep commitment to equity, inclusion, and social justice.

The training is free and open to Western Washington University students, staff, faculty, as well as Whatcom County community members. Participants in these trainings are asked to commit to serving as a facilitator at this year’s Campus Wide Dialogue Series events. Last year the Campus Wide Dialogue Series offered two Talkin’ Race dialogue events. In the 2017/2018 academic year three dialogues will be offered in December, March and May with days and times to be announced.

Those who wish to commit to the training and service can sign up for a training on their selected date. Only one training session is required.
