Event May 5 to celebrate competitors for scholarships, fellowships

A celebration to recognize those involved in this year's competition for national scholarships and fellowships will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 5, in the Western Gallery on the Western Washington University campus.

Every year, the competition increases the visibility of such awards among Western students, encouraging others to get involved, said Tom Moore, the director of Western's Fellowships Office. The competition also raises the national profile of the university, he added.

"In the past six years, our great discovery has been that the best of our students can compete with their peers anywhere in the country," Moore said.

Several students will speak at the event. Western Provost Brent Carbajal also will speak.

The event is free and open to the public. Hors d' oeuvres will be served.

RSVP by May 1 to Dr. Moore at Tom.Moore@wwu.edu or 360-650-4074.
