EO Office posts upcoming training opportunities

Upcoming learning opportunities with the EO Office

STAR: Building Inclusive Working Environments, May 10 from 2-4 p.m.  This session is part of the STAR series for supervisors.  The workshop first reviews legal and policy requirements regarding preventing and responding to workplace discrimination and harassment. The workshop then gives supervisors an opportunity to think critically about how they interact with employees of different backgrounds, and to explore ways to foster work environments where employees of diverse identities are respected and valued.

Understanding and Addressing Implicit Bias, May 14 from 2-3 p.m.  This workshop explores how unconscious biases can impact interactions with and decisions about job applicants, students, colleagues, and others we engage with in our roles at Western. Workshop participants will learn tools to limit the influence of implicit biases, and to productively address concerns about unconscious bias when they arise.

Sexual Harassment Prevention Training, May 17 from 2-4 p.m. and June 5 from 2-4 p.m.  In-person Sexual Harassment Prevention Training (SHPT) is required for all permanent faculty and staff. This training must be completed within the first six months of employment. Employees who need to complete SHPT can register for a session by going here and then scrolling down and selecting “Equal Opportunity Office.”

Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action in Classified Staff Searches, May 31 from 9-10:30 a.m.  This session explores what equal opportunity and affirmative action requirements mean in practice as Western conducts searches for classified staff positions, and what search committees can do to ensure that searches for classified staff are equitable and inclusive of diverse applicants at every step. This training is geared towards staff and faculty who have not recently attended search briefings provided by the Equal Opportunity Office for professional staff or faculty search committees.

Please contact the Equal Opportunity Office at x3307 with questions about these trainings.

Ongoing training about sexual harassment prevention and response required for faculty and staff

All new Western employees, including temporary employees, are required to complete Haven for Faculty and Staff, an online training about sexual violence prevention and response. This training is required in addition to in-person Sexual Harassment Prevention Training for new permanent employees (see above).  Haven is also available to all faculty and staff; faculty and staff are encouraged to access the training at https://shib.everfi.net/login/default.aspx?id=wwuhfs. To learn more about this training, please visit the Equal Opportunity Office website.

On an ongoing basis, faculty and staff are required to complete online Sexual Harassment Prevention Refresher Training in Canvas every three years. On April 5, employees who are due to complete the Refresher Training received an email from L.K. Langley, Manager of Equal Opportunity Programs, with instructions to access the training. Employees who need to complete the Canvas course can access it via the April 5 email or at https://wwu.instructure.com/courses/1212337. The training should be completed by May 18, 2018.
