Documentary 'Return of the River' to screen at Western Nov. 13

Western Washington University’s Huxley College of the Environment and Western Libraries are co-hosting a screening of the film “Return of the River” at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13 in the Academic Instructional Center-West Room 204 on Western’s campus.

“Return of the River” is a documentary film about the Elwha River dam removal and restoration project, the largest dam project of its kind in United States history. The film focuses on the effort it takes to restore the river’s ecosystem.

The film will be followed by a question-and-answer period with the film's director, John Gussman.

“Return of the River” was shown at Bellingham's Pickford Film Center in Bellingham on Oct. 4 as part of the “Doctober” month of documentaries, and the debut also introduced the opening of the exhibit “Elwha: A River Reborn” in Western Libraries Special Collections.

“Elwha: A River Reborn” is a new traveling exhibit from the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture on display from Oct. 6 to Dec. 30 in Western Libraries Special Collections on the sixth Floor of Wilson Library on Western’s campus.

The film is a Western’s Huxley College of the Environment Speaker Series’ event.

The Huxley Speaker Series is intended to bring together environmentally-minded members of Western and Bellingham communities. Speakers address topics of contemporary environmental concern in the region and the world.
