Dec. 6 presentation to cover work of famed Lummi carver Joe Hillaire

Western Libraries Heritage Resources will host a presentation featuring Lummi elder Pauline Hillaire’s new book, "A Totem Pole History: The Work of Lummi Carver Joe Hillaire,"  at 3 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, in Western Washington University’s Wilson Library Reading Room (Wilson 4 Central).

The event is free and open to the public.

Lummi Indian Nation carver Felix Solomon, research associate of Indiana University’s American Indian Studies Research Institute Greg Fields and Pigment Specialist Melonie Ancheta will present their contributions to the book that illustrates Hillaire’s life and influence from his carvings.

Joseph Hillaire is regarded as one of the most influential Coast Salish artists, carvers and tradition-bearers of the 20th century.

This event is offered in association with the Western Libraries Northwest Collection, which features works by authors, scholars and others whose efforst have contributed significantly to an understanding of the Pacific Northwest region.
