Auditions announced for Theatre and Dance Department productions

Western's Theatre and Dance Department is hosting auditions this month for upcoming productions.

New Works Reading Series Auditions

The 2022 New Works Reading Series features new works from Western students and alumni that will be directed by a guest director. We'll read ten plays over the course of three weekends. Performances will include one full-length play, an evening of two one-act plays, and an evening of 10-minute plays. Each play reading will be performed twice live on-stage in Old Main Theater and will also be live-streamed. Auditions are taking place over Zoom on Tuesday, Feb. 22, from 6-10 p.m. with callbacks on Thursday, Feb. 24, from 5-10 p.m. on Zoom. Auditioners will be asked to tell a story, and cold reads will be provided by the audition team during your timeslot. All performers must be fully vaccinated and prepared to provide proof of vaccination when registering for an audition slot. To sign up or learn more, please check out the New Works Reading Series Audition Page

Men on Boats Auditions

Auditions for the upcoming production of "Men on Boats" by Jaclyn Backhaus directed by Rich Brown will take place in-person from 5-7 p.m. on February 24 and 25, with callbacks taking place on February 26, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in PA 199. You will only need to come in for one of the audition days and will be notified of callbacks the night of the 25. Auditioners are asked to prepare a 1-minute monologue that is show appropriate. Check out the Men on Boats Audition Page to sign up! All auditioners must be fully vaccinated regardless of waiver/exception status. Participants will be expected to prove their vaccination status by presenting their physical vaccination card or a clear photo of their vaccination card. Copies of the script are available for 2-hour checkout in the Theatre and Dance Office (PA 395).

Casting for Two Contemporary Dance Pieces

The Dance Program is excited to announce two audition opportunities for Spring Quarter performances of works by Liz Gerring. Gerring is an award-winning choreographer based in New York with recent performances in collaboration with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, the Martha Graham Dance Company, and a recipient of the prestigious Jacob’s Pillow Award.

Piece #1: Audition for guest artist piece by Liz Gerring on Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. at the Commissary Dance studios. We will be casting four to five dancers for the restaging of the piece from 2020. The piece will premiere in the Dance in Concert performance on Mainstage May 6-9. The audition is open to all WWU students; however, due to the close contact of the piece, all audition participants must show proof of vaccination (no waivers permitted) and be prepared to learn challenging movement phrases at the audition.

Piece #2: Liz Gerring will also be creating a new site-specific work open to all interested performers with rehearsals April 9-10 and performances on April 11, 2022. We are hoping for a large cast for this site-specific piece. This is a great chance to broaden your performance experience and boost your resume with a performance credit with a nationally recognized choreographer. Email susan.haines@wwu.edu for information about the audition and site-specific performance.
