ASWWU Begins Accepting Applications for the 2021-22 Student Trustee

On Friday, March 5, the Associated Students of Western Washington University (ASWWU) will begin accepting applications from students to serve as the next Student Trustee. Applications will be accepted until March 31 at 4 p.m.

“Being able to serve on the Board of Trustees is a great opportunity to learn how the university works. You get to add your perspective and weigh in on issues that impact the entire campus community. If your goal is to be heard, this is your position,” AS President Abdul Malik Ford said as he reflected on engaging students to apply.

The WWU Board of Trustees is the university’s governing body, whose broad responsibilities are to supervise, coordinate, manage, and regulate WWU as provided by state statute.

“Having thoughtful and engaged student leadership on the Board of Trustees is critical to advancing Western’s goals with respect to inclusive student success, the quality of the student experience, and increasing Western’s impact in the region,” WWU President Sabah Randhawa said. This July, the Board will welcome their 23rd Student Trustee, who will collaboratively steward WWU’s continued growth.

“The experience and perspective that current students can add to the conversations that shape the strategic direction of the University is invaluable,” said Randhawa.

Students who are interested can find more information and application instructions at www.trustees.wwu.edu/student-trustees. It is also encouraged that students contact the current Student Trustee Hunter Stuehm at stuehmh@wwu.edu in advance of applying to learn how the position relates to university governance.

The ASWWU initially screens all applicants with the purpose to provide the Office of the Governor with 3-5 finalists for consideration. The position also allows students to develop their personal and professional skills. Ford noted, “Being appointed by the Governor of Washington is an incredible opportunity for students to build their resumes; it prepares you to develop leadership skills and apply them to future community-based work.” At-large students who are interested in being involved in the screening process can apply via the 2020-21 AS and University Committees Student Application Form at win.wwu.edu/forms.
