Archaeology, music and stars: New program teaches science to youth

Western Washington University Youth Programs will launch a new three-session science program aimed at children in grades three through five called “Kids Night Out @ Western” (KNOW); the first session called “You Can Dig It: Archaeology” is scheduled from 7-10 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14 at Western’s Science Resource Center.

The program’s following sessions are “The Science of Music” on Jan. 23 and “Science of the Stars” on Mar. 6.

The program will provide participants with hands-on science activities, followed by an hour-long swim at the Wade King Student Recreation Center pool on Western’s campus.

Individual sessions are available for $35 each, and all three sessions cost $90. Registration is available online at wwu.edu/youth.

Students should bring a backpack, including a swimsuit, a towel, a nutritious snack, and, of course, a hunger to learn.

KNOW evening schedule:

  • 6:45-7 p.m. // Students check in at the Science, Math, and Technology Education (SMATE) building on Western’s campus.
  • 7-8:15 p.m. // Lessons and activities
  • 8:15-8:30 p.m. // Snack
  • 8:30-9:30 p.m. // Swim at the Wade King Student Recreation Center pool on Western’s campus
  • 9:30-9:45 p.m. // Change into dry clothes.
  • 9:45- 10 p.m. // Students check out at the Wade King Student Recreation Center.
