Apply Now: ASWWU begins accepting applications for the position of AS President

On Monday, July 13, the Associated Students of Western Washington University (ASWWU) announced that, instead of a special election, the position of AS President will be filled via an appointment process. The appointment committee was charged by a unanimous vote of the AS Executive Board to review applications and return in early August with no fewer than two finalists. Appointments to the committee were made by acting AS President Nicole Ballard. Committee members include Keenan Kaemingk, AS vice president for Activities, Carson Brock, AS vice president for Student Services, and Kaylan Rocamora, AS personnel director.

“Right now, it’s probably most appropriate to do an appointment as opposed to an election, seeing as a fall election puts us at a disadvantage because it’s further out and there’s less training for that individual in the presidential position. I think a summer election is not super equitable, as a lot of students are not paying attention to some of things that are going on within the AS as well as there are less students in general. I think an appointment is the best way to move forward,” Kaemingk said during the Board’s special meeting on July 10.

The AS President serves as the chief administrative and financial officer of the ASWWU; they also serve as the spokesperson and chair of the AS Executive Board of Directors. Preferred qualifications include leadership experience, a working knowledge of university governance, and the ability to work collaboratively with people of diverse backgrounds and opinions.

The application for the 2020-21 AS President position is available online at the current web address: https://tinyurl.com/ASPresident20. All Western students who have completed at least five quarters of college coursework and two quarters at Western Washington University are eligible and invited to apply for the 2020-21 AS President position as long as they are registered for at least six or four undergraduate or graduate credits, respectively. It is also expected that the appointee will serve in this position until the end of Spring Quarter 2021. Application materials can be submitted via the Microsoft Office form available at the above-captioned link until Aug. 2 at 11:59 p.m. Applicants will be asked to submit a resume and written responses to questions.
