Annika Wolters elected WWU Associated Students president

Annika Wolters has been elected Western Washington University’s Associated Students president for the 2014-2015 academic year.

The Associated Students is both the association of all WWU students and the official student governing body. The AS is responsible for providing a framework for a variety of experiential learning opportunities and serving as a vehicle for student involvement in the governance of the university.

As president, Wolters will be chairperson of AS board meetings, oversee AS operations, and represent the Associated Students to the university’s Board of Trustees.

"This was never about me. I ran for president because students asked me to. Now I get to support and nourish the goals and strengths of six AS vice presidents, who happen to be more students. I don't aim to be just the president of the Associated Students, but a genuine peer and venue for dissociated students to become more involved and take full advantage of our education. I've gained the trust of the majority of the voters, but I'm after the confidence of the majority – who never thought to cast a ballot,” Wolters said.

Wolters, a senior from Long Beach, Wash., is double majoring in Communication Studies and Journalism, minoring in Women’s Studies. She has worked as a reporter for Lewis Publishing Co. in Lynden, served as vice president for Western's Black Student Union, has been a scholar of leadership in LEADS (Leaders Engage in Action, Discernment and Skills-building) and spent winter 2013 studying abroad in Kenya and Rwanda with the WWU Center for Service-Learning.
