A Bright Path to Dark Skies at Western

The Facility Development and Operations Department will be kicking off a project to install Dark Sky compliant light fixtures throughout the perimeter areas of campus in the next several weeks. This project will upgrade these areas to International Dark Skies protocols to reduce the impacts that light pollution has on animals that navigate at night. The new fixtures also use significantly less energy than the old lights.

Work will take place from 6a.m. to 4 p.m. daily from Nov. 21 to Jan. 30, 2023 and includes the Ridgeway Paths, Fairhaven Paths and Access Road, Bill McDonald Parkway, East College Drive, and Highland Drive. Since the areas will be de-energized one circuit at a time at 6 a.m. daily, then turned back on at 4 p.m., there will be sections that are dark in the early morning during the installation. Please take care navigating if the area is dark due to work in the area. For any questions, please contact the Facility Development Office at FixIt@wwu.edu
