Viking Union to celebrate 50th birthday with week of parties

During the week of Oct. 30 to Nov. 7 the Viking Union will celebrate its 50th anniversary with events, activities food and giveaways.

The VU opened in 1959 and has since been the center for student and campus life. It houses the Board of Directors, the Associated Students, the VU Gallery, KUGS and other offices and services of Western.

Monday through Friday of that week will include a daily celebration of the past five decades. “Decade Days” will begin on Monday with the 1950s, continue on Tuesday with the 1960s, Wednesday with the 1970s and Thursday with the 1980s, and conclude on Friday with the 1990s. Viking Union facility and student staff are welcome and encouraged to dress up for each of the themed decades.

Bellingham Mayor Dan Pike will visit the Viking Union at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, to officially declare the week Viking Union week and to present the 1959 time capsule during an opening ceremony. There be an opportunity during the week to view the contents of that 1959 time capsule as well as make suggestions of what to put into the new time capsule, called "Unite the Past Through Tomorrow."

KUGS, Western's student-run radio station, will be participating in Decade Days as well, with its daily decade music program broadcasting from noon to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday from the VU 6th-floor lobby.

There'll be a 50th Anniversary Candy Sale put on by the VU Info Desk, and dining discounts will be offered throughout the week. From Monday through Friday, Dining Services be offering discounted 12-oz. cups of drip coffee at the VU Market, VU Café and the Underground Coffeehouse. Discounted fountain soda also will be available at the VU Market. The special prices are as follows:

  • Mon., Nov. 2: 59-cent tall drip coffee or fountain soda
  • Tues., Nov. 3: 69-cent tall drip coffee or fountain soda
  • Wed., Nov. 4: 79-cent tall drip coffee or fountain soda
  • Thurs., Nov. 5: 89-cent tall drip coffee or fountain soda
  • Fri., Nov. 6: 99-cent tall drip coffee or fountain soda
