MLK conference set for Saturday, Jan. 17

The Whatcom Human Rights Task Force and the Whatcom Peace & Justice Center invite the community to join them for the Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Human Rights Conference on Saturday, Jan. 17. The conference runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Syre Center at Whatcom Community College. Doors open for Bellingham School District educators to register clock hours at 9:30 a.m.

This year’s theme “Making the Dream Our Reality” will be addressed by keynote speaker Erin Jones. Director of Equity and Achievement for Federal Way Public Schools, Jones was honored by the White House as one of 10 education leaders who have devoted their professional careers to helping further education achievement among African American students. Erin received recognition at the White House in March of 2013 as a “Champion of Change.”

Skill building workshops will follow and be facilitated by community educators and activists. A complete list of workshops is available at the link above. No registration is needed, except Bellingham School District Educators seeking clock hours.

Light refreshments provided throughout the morning. Food vendors will be on site with lunch options for sale.

This event is free and open to the public of all ages, and students and educators are encouraged to attend.
