Memorial service for Shearlean Duke set for March 6

A memorial service for Shearlean Duke, the Western Washington University journalism professor who passed away earlier this month, has been set for noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 6, at the Squalicum Boathouse in Bellingham.

Everyone who knew and cared for Shearlean is invited to be present, either in spirit or in person, to celebrate Shearlean’s life with displays of artifacts, ceremonies and sharing of memories. Food and beverages will be served.

The boathouse is located at 2600 S. Harbor Loop, Bellingham, 98225.

Photographs and samples of Shearlean’s writing, work, travel and other achievements will be displayed to introduce Shearlean to those who did not know her well and to remind others of her many accomplishments and life well-lived, said her husband, Bob, in an e-mail message announcing the event.

A brief ceremony, consisting of a eulogy of words, songs and poetry presented by friends and colleagues, will begin at 1:30 p.m. "Shearlean stories" abound, and a few will be shared to illuminate her life.

Those who want to contribute to the ceremony should contact Bob ahead of time.

Guests are invited to contribute items for display, and a table will be set aside for that purpose.
