Twenty-eight young women from Whatcom County high schools were honored May 14 by the Bellingham branch of the American Association of University Women at the annual High School Scholars Recognition Program. The high school juniors were nominated by their respective schools for excellence in math, science and technology, according to Gwen Parker.

Northwest Missouri State head football coach Scott Bostwick, 50, died this morning from an apparent heart attack, the university has announced. Bostwick was the top assistant at Western Washington University for four seasons in the early 1990s.

Bostwick was mowing his yard when the heart attack occurred, according to multiple Northwest sources. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Western Washington University distance runner Jordan Welling has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America Capital One Academic All-District 8 college division first team for men's cross country and track and field.

Welling, a senior from Burlington, is a manufacturing major with a 3.59 grade point average. He will be placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America honors.
