"Yale University topped this week’s USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division I Coaches poll, while Western Washington University and Williams College claimed the top spots in the Division II and III polls, respectively.

Yale University earned 10 first-place votes to remain atop the Division I team rankings. The University of Virginia received seven first-place votes to rank second, while Stanford University earned eight first-place votes to rank third. The University of California and Brown University rounded out the top five.

Western Washington University was the unanimous choice in this week’s Division II poll, receiving all five first-place votes. Barry University ranked second, followed by Mercyhurst College."

The kind of jellyfish most people encounter - the species that sting, the Lion's Mane and Sea Nettle - are not common this time of year, said Deborah Steinberg, a jellyfish expert at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in Gloucester Point."

"Former Ashland High basketball standout Rory Blanche has been named a Great Northwest Athletic Conference Academic All-Star for Western Washington University.

The sophomore forward is maintaining a 3.72 grade point average as an engineering technology major at the NCAA Division II school.

A top reserve, Blanche averaged 8.5 points while shooting a team-best 58 percent from the floor for the Vikings, who lost to Cal Poly Pomona in the west regional semifinals March 13. After beating Western Washington in overtime, Cal Poly Pamona went on to claim its first Division II national championship."

Steven Herzog, the interim superintendent of the Douglas County School District in Castle Rock, Colo., has accepted a superintendent position in the San Francisco area.

The remaining finalist, Gregory Baker, deputy superintendent of the Portland Public Schools in Oregon, will be in the district today, Monday, March 29, touring facilities and speaking with students and staff. At 4 p.m., he will answer questions at a public forum in Bellingham High School's auditorium. Baker will answer questions from a four-person panel consisting of a student, parent, staff member and principal."
