"Showing progress in tax-hike negotiations that have vexed the Washington Legislature, the top Senate Democrat said Friday she's identified about $100 million in tax options that avoid a contentious increase in the state sales tax.

Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown, D-Spokane, wouldn't discuss specifics of a tax package, saying she wants to present a comprehensive $200 million plan to the House and Gov. Chris Gregoire -- possibly as soon as Monday."

"Courtney Olsen broke her own school record in winning the women's 3000-meter steeplechase, highlighting Western Washington University performances as both the Viking men and women claimed team championships Saturday, April 3, at the 25th annual University of Puget Sound J.D. Shotwell Track & Field Invitational in Tacoma.

Western won the men's title with 183.5 points, with Central Washington second at 148 in the 12-team field. The Vikings used their depth to claim the triumph, winning just four events, but having an athlete in the top three in all but five."

The Vikings received 58.5 points in men's indoor track, 57.75 in women's indoor track, 50 in men's basketball and 25 in women's basketball. That gave them a winter sports total of 191.25 for an overall total of 337.25."

"In his youth, Johnny Moses was an all-around athlete who became one of the greatest basketball stars to come out of Castle Rock High School.

But Moses' life was about more than basketball. He was also a respected Kalama businessman and served many years on a number of community boards and committees.

The 88-year-old Moses, a younger brother of legendary R.A. Long High basketball coach Joe Moses, died March 28 at St. John Medical Center."
