"Funding for a pilot project to provide health care to 1,000 Whatcom County residents waiting for health insurance was vetoed by Gov. Chris Gregoire on Tuesday, May 4, but two other projects that local legislators included made it through.

State Rep. Kelli Linville, D-Bellingham, who led the House discussion on budget writing, had included nearly $2.5 million for the local pilot project and a separate one in Spokane County to provide health care services to low-income adults."

"Trish Skillman, director of the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Program at Western Washington University, is looking for donations of air miles to help send student teachers to Mexico to learn more about the culture of their future students.

The program holds classes that would normally be held in Bellingham but instead are held in Queretaro, Mexico, where the students can live with Mexican families, experience being an outsider, and learn some Spanish, all while they work on their teacher preparation coursework."

That was the message Tuesday, May 4, from President Bruce Shepard and Vice President Steve Swan, at a meeting of Western Crossing, a joint panel of university and Port of Bellingham representatives formed to guide the university's involvement in redevelopment of 220 waterfront acres. The panel includes Shepard, WWU Trustee Peggy Zoro, Port Commissioner Scott Walker and acting Port Executive Director Fred Seeger."

Porter, a junior from Hockinson, qualified for the USA Track & Field Championships by placing 15th in the 10,000 meters with a school and GNAC record time of 33:36.83 at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational on Saturday at Stanford, Calif."
